What has been your journey to date in the early childhood sector?

I began my career as an early childhood educator in Tasmania in 1989. Over the past 37 years, I have worked across early learning services, leadership positions and community-based programs. My practice is grounded in child-centred, inquiry-based learning, with a particular interest in the Reggio Emilia approach, nature pedagogy and inclusive education.

Why do you work in the early childhood sector? What is it that motivates you?

I am motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to children’s learning and development, particularly in regional and diverse communities. Building trusting relationships with children, families and colleagues is central to my practice. I value creating inclusive learning environments where every child feels a sense of belonging and is supported to learn and thrive.

What are your career goals, and what challenges have you faced in working towards them?

My goal is to become a qualified Early Childhood Teacher and deliver high-quality, culturally responsive education in remote Aboriginal communities. While working in a remote Aboriginal community, I developed and delivered early learning programs in collaboration with community members. This experience strengthened my commitment to ensuring children can access education that reflects their culture and community.

The geographic isolation of remote communities can create barriers to accessing early childhood education. Further study will strengthen my teaching knowledge and qualifications, enabling me to contribute more effectively in these settings.

How has the Fraser Foundation helped you overcome these challenges?

The Fraser Foundation’s support in covering my course fees has removed a significant financial barrier to further study. It has enabled me to focus on gaining the qualifications needed to become an Early Childhood Teacher and pursue my goal of teaching in a remote Aboriginal community.

What would you like to say to the people who have donated to the Fraser Foundation and to its founders?

I would like to sincerely thank the Fraser Foundation for giving me this opportunity to pursue my education, so that I can further my skills, knowledge, professionalism and pedagogy.

What difference has the Fraser Foundation made to you?

The Fraser Foundation scholarship has made it possible for me to further my education without the added pressure of course fees or additional study debt. That financial support allows me to focus on developing my skills as an Early Childhood Teacher. It also gives me greater confidence as I work towards a career I am passionate about and a more secure financial future.

What’s next for you?

My next step is to make the most of my studies and apply what I learn in the classroom. I look forward to strengthening my teaching practice and working towards my goal of providing high-quality, culturally responsive early childhood education for children in remote communities.
