Privacy Policy
Last updated: 15 Jan 2026 The Fraser Foundation looks after personal information belonging to the people we work with — scholarship and grant applicants, educators, researchers, donors, supporters and the people who visit our website. This page explains what we collect, why we collect it, what we do with it, and how you can get in touch about it. We follow the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. We’re a charity registered with the ACNC, and we work only with people based in Australia. This policy covers thefraserfoundation.com.au and everything we collect through our website, forms, surveys, events and emails.
1. What we mean by personal information Personal information is anything that identifies you, or that could reasonably be used to work out who you are. That includes things like your name and contact details, and also technical details like your IP address or a cookie on your device. Some information is more private than the rest — things like your cultural background (including Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status), health, or a disability. The law calls this sensitive information, and we treat it with extra care. There’s more on that in section 3.
2. What we collect What we collect depends on how you deal with us. It can include:
Your details — name, email, phone, address, date of birth, and the service or organisation you work at.
Application information — your study and work history, qualifications, course details, supporting statements, referees, and information about your circumstances and why you need support.
Survey answers — what you tell us when you take part in our research and surveys, like the Voice of the Educator Survey.
Donation details — your donation amount and billing details. Card payments go through our payment provider — we don’t store full card numbers.
Event and enquiry details — registrations, attendance, questions, feedback and emails.
Website information — your IP address, device and browser, and which pages you visit, collected through cookies (see section 9).
3. Sensitive information Our scholarships and grants exist to remove barriers for educators, so our application forms sometimes ask about things like your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status, a disability or health condition, or financial hardship. We only collect this kind of information when you choose to give it to us as part of your application, or when the law lets us. You don’t have to provide it — but in some cases it may affect whether we can assess your application. We only use it for the reason you gave it to us.
4. How we collect it Most of the time we collect information straight from you — through forms, surveys, donations, event sign-ups, and emails. Sometimes we collect it from other people or organisations where it makes sense, like a referee you’ve nominated or a partner we work with. If we ever receive information about you that we didn’t ask for, we handle it the way the Privacy Act requires.
5. Why we collect it and what we do with it We use your information to run our charitable work.
That means things like:
assessing and awarding scholarships and grants;
managing scholarship agreements and staying in touch with recipients;
running research, surveys and programs that support educators;
processing donations and keeping donor records;
organising events and professional development;
answering your questions and keeping you updated;
improving our website and our programs;
meeting our reporting, audit, insurance and legal obligations.
We only use your information for the reason we collected it, for something closely related that you’d expect, where you’ve agreed, or where the law requires it.
6. Who we share it with Sometimes we need to share your information to get things done. That can include:
The providers who help us run — website and IT hosting, email and CRM tools, survey and form tools, our payment provider, and our advisers (legal, accounting, audit);
Partners we work with on programs and research — for example, the research firm that runs a survey, or a sector organisation we partner with;
The panels and assessors who review applications;
Regulators or authorities when the law requires it. We expect anyone we share information with to look after it properly. We never sell your information.
7. Emails and updates We may use your contact details to send you newsletters and updates about our work, programs and events. Every email has an easy way to unsubscribe, and you can ask us to stop any time. We don’t use sensitive information for marketing.
8. Information that’s stored overseas We only work with people in Australia, but some of the tools we use — like hosting, email or analytics — may store or process information on servers outside Australia. When that happens, the information may be held in the United States and the European Union. Before that happens, we take reasonable steps to make sure it’s handled to the same standard required here.
9. Cookies and our website Our website uses cookies. Some are needed for the site to work and to remember your preferences. Others help us see how people use the site so we can make it better. You can turn cookies off in your browser settings, but some parts of the site might not work as well if you do. Where we use analytics tools, those providers collect information under their own privacy terms.
10. Keeping your information safe We store information electronically and, where needed, on paper. We take reasonable steps to protect it from loss, misuse and unauthorised access — including access controls, secure storage and careful arrangements with our providers. No system is ever completely secure, though, so we can’t promise it’s impossible for something to go wrong.
11. If something goes wrong We have a plan for spotting and dealing with data breaches. If a breach happens that’s likely to cause serious harm, we’ll do what the law requires — including telling the people affected and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
12. How long we keep it We keep your information only as long as we need it, or as long as the law requires us to. After that, we take reasonable steps to either destroy it or remove anything that identifies you.
13. Seeing and fixing your information You can ask to see the information we hold about you, and ask us to fix anything that’s wrong or out of date. Just contact us using the details in section 16. We’ll get back to you within a reasonable time. There’s usually no charge. In some cases the law lets us say no to a request — if that happens, we’ll explain why.
14. Decisions about applications Decisions about scholarships and grants are made by our people and selection panels — not by a computer working on its own.
15. Children and young people Our programs are for adults — generally educators aged 17 and over — and our website isn’t aimed at young children. We don’t knowingly collect information from children. Where we do handle information about young people, we treat it carefully and in line with our child-safe commitments.
16. Contact us or make a complaint If you have a question, want to see or fix your information, or want to make a complaint, get in touch with our Privacy Officer:
