Learn more about Carolyne
I am studying a Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching at Swinburne University of Technology. I am completing my studies while continuing to work in the early childhood industry, which allows me to apply what I am learning in my work with young children.
What are you studying, and where?
I heard about the Fraser Foundation after asking my centre manager if she knew of any scholarships to help with the cost of my university fees. With the cost of living continuing to rise, I thought it was worth applying for a scholarship to help with the financial commitment of studying. I was very grateful and excited when I found out that I had been successful.
How did you hear about the Fraser Foundation?
Receiving the Fraser Foundation scholarship means a great deal to me. It has eased some of the financial pressure while I complete my studies and has given me extra support to continue working towards becoming an Early Childhood Teacher. After working in the industry for nearly 30 years, it is very rewarding to know that an organisation like the Fraser Foundation supports people committed to early childhood education. I am very grateful for the opportunity and support.
How does it feel to receive a Fraser Foundation scholarship?
I have worked in the early childhood industry for nearly 30 years and have developed a strong passion for working with children aged 3–5 years. This has always been my favourite age group because I love watching children become more independent, confident and curious as they learn and prepare for school.
After so many years in the industry, I felt it was time to take the next step in my career and become an Early Childhood Teacher. I wanted to build on the experience and knowledge I have gained over the years, continue developing my skills, and further my career while continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of young children.
What inspired you to become an early childhood teacher?
One of the best parts of working with young children is watching them learn, grow and develop their personalities and confidence. It is very rewarding to see the excitement on a child's face when they achieve something for the first time or realise they can do it independently. I also love the relationships we build with children and their families, and being part of such an important stage in a child's life.
One challenge is that every child is different, with their own needs, interests, and ways of learning. As educators, we need to be flexible, patient, and responsive so every child feels included, supported, and valued. While this can be challenging, it is also what makes working in early childhood so rewarding.
What are the best and most challenging parts of working with young children?
I would like to sincerely thank the Fraser Foundation for supporting me throughout my studies. After nearly 30 years in the early childhood industry, I am excited to take the next step in my career and become an Early Childhood Teacher. The scholarship has made a real difference and made continuing my studies more achievable during a time when the cost of living is rising.
I am very grateful for your support and the opportunity to continue doing what I am passionate about—working with young children and helping them learn, grow, and develop.
