“As a full time working mum, I once doubted whether I was capable of studying for my Bachelor’s degree. However, I’m driven by the desire to be a positive role model for my children.”

What will you be studying?

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education at Southern Cross University.

How did you hear about the Fraser Foundation?

I first learned about the Fraser Foundation while researching pathways to study in Australia as a New Zealander. During that process, I discovered their scholarships supporting aspiring Early Childhood educators which immediately caught my interest. I later reconnected with their work through social media and the impact of their programs inspired me to apply.

How does it feel to be a recipient of a Fraser Foundation scholarship?

I feel incredibly grateful and honoured to receive a Fraser Foundation scholarship. This support has eased a significant financial burden allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and future goals. It’s both encouraging and motivating and it inspires me to make the most of this opportunity.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education?

My inspiration to pursue a career as an Early Childhood Teacher began when I moved from New Zealand to Australia ten years ago with my eldest daughter. I was looking for a meaningful career that would also allow me to stay present during her early years, which led me to study my Certificate III and later my Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. After many years in the sector, I felt inspired to continue growing professionally and am now completing my degree.

What started as a practical decision quickly became a true passion. Through my experience, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for play-based learning and the important role educators have in shaping children’s early development. Seeing children grow in confidence, curiosity and independence is incredibly rewarding and my journey has also strengthened my perspective as a parent - highlighting just how capable and competent young children truly are.

What is the best and most challenging parts of working with young children?

The most rewarding part of my role is watching children grow - developing new skills, exploring their ideas and becoming confident in who they are. Their curiosity and enthusiasm make every day meaningful and it’s a privilege to support them during such an important stage of life.

The challenges come in meeting the diverse needs of each child and creating an environment where every child feels supported and included. This requires patience, adaptability and ongoing learning but it’s also what makes the work so impactful and fulfilling.

What is the best and most challenging parts of working with young children?

As a full time working mum, I once doubted whether I was capable of studying for my Bachelor’s degree. However, I’m driven by the desire to be a positive role model for my children—to show them the importance of believing in themselves and understanding that if something truly matters, it’s worth putting in the effort and pursuing it with dedication and purpose.
